of the P.R.C. He seemed a very nice gentleman and he is a man who has a huge vision to bring China to the top. I presented him with a book and a letter. Everyone in Sweden was eager to discuss economic issues, perhaps cultural exchange is not so important these days!?

China to spend billions on environmental cooperation

Eleven Swedish – Chinese agreements were the outcome of China`s Prime Minister Wen Jiabao`s visit to Sweden. But the surprise of the day was a Chinese multi-billion venture with Sweden in the field of environment.

For the first time in 28 years a Chinese prime minister is visiting Sweden. With him is a 70- man government delegation which includes the foreign, environmental, and progress ministers.
Sweden was one of the first countries to recognize the People`s Republic of China after the communist takeover in 1949. The government is hoping that this will be to its advantage now that the world`s most populated country has grown to become an economic superpower. Six of the eleven agreements signed during Prime Minister Wen Jiabao`s visit are with Swedish companies, between Volvo and China Development Bank, and between Ericsson and Chinese telecom companies, among others.
One agreed with the Swedish government to work together for more effective traffic safety, development of railways, and several agreements in the field of environment.
During a press conference, where neither Wen Jiabao nor Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt answered any questions, the surprise statement came from the Chinese prime minister: China is to invest 1 billion euro – close to 9 billion Swedish Crowns – in research and industrial cooperation to promote Swedish-Chinese innovations in the area of environment.
Wen Jiabao was received at Arlanda Airport by a trouping of the guard of honor from the Lifeguard, and by the Army Orchestra who played China`s and Sweden`s national anthems. He arrived in Stockholm from Gothenburg where the delegation amongst other things visited the Chinese owned Volvo.
At 3pm on Tuesday Wen Jiabao arrived at the Royal Palace for an audience with King Carl XVI Gustaf. Near the palace a small group of Falun Gong activists staged a peaceful demon-stration against the persecution of its members in China, and at other places the Swedish Tibet Committee demonstrated, demanding that China leave Tibet.
Fredrik Reinfeldt said during the press conference that during talks with Wen Jiabao he had brought up the issues democracy and human rights, the situation in Tibet, and even the list of special cases of persecution which has been drawn up by EU.
Today, Wednesday, Wen Jiabao shall together with Reinfeldt make an appearance at a conference on sustainable development being organized by the foreign department and environmental department. After that the Chinese prime minister`s visit to Sweden is finished and he travels on to Poland.
